Lesson Plan for December 19

Hong Lin – Hangzhou Foreign Languages School

1. Teaching Material: American English in Mind Book 3, Unit 4: Live Forever (P38, Write)

2. Duration: 40 mins                              

3. Students: Senior One (48 students) in Hangzhou High School (Qianjiang department)

4. ObjectivesStudents will be able to write a draft essay to comment on others’ prediction...

    • on the topic of "if there will still be schools and teachers in the future";

    • after they learn about what the prediction is;

    • with the typical organization of an argument they get from the sample;

    • by thinking critically.

5. Teaching aids: A slide projector.

6. Procedures:

   (1) Lead-in  

        Play a short video about the Go match between Lee Sedol and AlphaGo. 

        Questions:

        1) What is the video about? 

           The Go match between Lee Sedol and AlphaGo.

        2) What can we learn from the result?

           (The result was 4:1. The world champion Lee Sedol was defeated by AlphaGo.)

           Artificial intelligence has already been smarter than people in playing Go.


   (2) Pre-writing   

        1) Reading the sample essay

            A. (Ex A)

      • Show the scientists’ claim and make comments.

      • What do you think of the scientist’s prediction?

      • Do you agree with them? Why?

      • How about the writer?  

      • What does he think of the scientists’ perdition?

        Fascinating.

      • Does he agree with them?

        No, he disagrees. He doesn’t believe it will really happen.

           (Though he doesn’t agree with the scientists, he shows his respect.)


            B. Get the structure. (Ex B)

      • Paragraph b - develops one side of the argument

      • Paragraph c - gives the opposing argument

      • Paragraph d- sums up the writer’s main idea  

      • Paragraph a - says what the writer is writing about


            C. Generate the mind map.

      Para. 2-

      I. Why do the scientists believe that computers will be more intelligent than people?

          Some fantastic inventions have been made.

      II. What inventions are made?

Help cure the diseases.

Understand what people say.

Give meaningful answers.

Have enormous memory capacities.

      III. What does the writer think of the scientists’ inventions? How do you know?

 He speaks high of them. “It is true that… fantastic.”

 (Though he doesn’t agree with the scientists, he shows his respect.)


      Para. 3-

      I. Which supporting idea in Para. 2 does the writer disagree with/oppose? 

          The third one.

      II. What does the writer think?

Human intelligence is more than having a good memory. They have emotions.

Human can do a lot more.

They laugh and cry; they enjoy a good film or an interesting book.

      III. Are the writer’s supporting ideas convincing/ supportive/ strong enough?

            What can we do to make it more convincing?


      Para. 4-

      I. What’s the conclusion?

   Computers can do all sorts of things that we can’t even dream of today.

   But human intelligence will be higher than artificial intelligence.

      II. What is the purpose of the underlined sentences in the composition? 

           Topic sentences.

        2) Read a short passage about scientists’ prediction which we are going to make comments on. Have the students discuss in pairs and answer the questions. And share their answers in class. (see the attachment)


   (3) While-writing

        Show the brief rubrics and have the students write on their own.


   (4) Post-writing

        General assessment

        • Is there a topic sentence in each paragraph?

        • Is the opposing argument convincing?

        • Are the transitions smooth?

        • Are the grammar, punctuation, and spelling correct?


   (5) Assignment

        • Revise your own paper with the help of the rubrics.

         Check your partner’s composition with the help of the rubrics.

        • Make notes in the margins about anything that needs to be revised.

        • Write the final copy in your exercise book.

Read the short passage about scientists’ prediction and answer the following questions.Scientists predict that there will be neither schools nor teachers in 40 years. They believe that in the society of the future both schools and teachers will stop to exist due to the advancement of technology. The scientists are confident that students will be able to study much more effectively with the virtual school system. They won't need to attend school because they can study at their own home using computers that allow them to chat with their classmates and be taught by virtual teachers from a program. The virtual teachers will be much more intelligent than human teachers and could teach with the most suitable ways for the students.

Questions:

1. What is the scientists’ prediction?

2. Why do they believe so?

3. What are the specific results the advancement of technology will bring?

      Suggested pattern: They will bring virtual school system that … / virtual teachers that….

4. Do you agree? If not, which point do you disagree with? Discuss with your partner.

                 Suggested patterns: A school is more than a place where …

                 Teachers are more than someone who…
